The 1826 Tithe Applotment Books of Kilmurry-Ibrickane of Moyglass More.

Peter Sexton*                             19 Acres

Widow Sexton                           19 Acres

Daniel Sexton                             9 Acres

Michael Sexton                           9 Acres

Peter Sexton 2nd holding            10 Acres

Peter Sexton* of the 1826 Tithe Applotment Books is probably Peter Sexton the husband of Catherine Downes the parents of James, Michael and Peter Sexton.  Peter died 1 March 1866 and the land was still in the name of Peter Sexton so I presume that Catherine Downes Sexton had predeceased Peter Sexton.

I have not confirmed that the Peter Sexton that died in March of 1866 is in fact Peter Sexton of Moyglass but plan on obtaining the certificate

The townland of Moyglass beg is listed with one Michael Sexton as "occupier" of 5 acres

The 1855 Griffith Valuation lists 4 distinct Sexton occupiers of land in Moyglass More townland in the Kilmurry-Ibrickane Parish.

Lot 6a   Peter Sexton 33 acres with house, office and 33 acres of land

Lot 7a   Anne Sexton (James) 15 acres with a house, office

Lot 8a   Anne Sexton (Daniel) 15 acres of land a Herd's house, office and land

Lot 9a   Michael Sexton 32 acres with a house, office and another house on the land rented to Tim Normile who raised his family on this farm.

After studying the map and 1855 Griffith Valuation, I noticed that the 4 farms were very close in size with each having approximately 32 acres. The farms are near each other and may have been divided up equally within the Sexton family. I suspect these 4 Sexton families are related. At this time I do not have any records to prove this possible relationship.

The Griffith Valuation Revision Book Notes

Lot  6         Peter Sexton – During the 1860’s Peter Sexton’s farm lands increased in size and now included Lots 2, 3 & 4. Lot 6 now was occupied by Patrick O’Dwyer who was previously on Lot 4.  Lot 4 is not listed on the Griffith Valuation Map. I don’t know why??.

In 1895 & 1896 Lot 4 showed the land was transferred to Peter Sexton.  Lot 3 only showed the dates on 1895 & 1896 without a name change.  I assume this is the son of Peter Sexton.

In 1907 James Sexton was listed as occupier of Lots 2 & 3 and Patrick Sexton as occupier of Lot 4.  Around 1946 Lots 2 & 3 were listed as occupied by Patrick Sexton & John Sexton Jr.

Lot 4  went   from Patrick Sexton to Patrick Doohan in 1933.  (Patrick Doonhan of Connolly married Catherine Sexton the daughter of James Sexton and Nora O’Shea of Moyglass).

I think that James Sexton and Patrick Sexton were brothers and shared the father’s land.  Their parents were Peter Sexton and Ellen Sexton.

Peter occupied Lot 6 on the Griffith Valuation Map

I have been in contact with descendants of the Sexton families that lived on Lot 6 and Lot 7 & 8. I do not have any information

I would be interested in any comments or hearing from anyone descended from the Sexton's of Moyglass More.

Slan,
Kevin J. O'Brien

  1. Query your notes have James son of James Sexton and Anne Marrinan going to Australia. No Trace Death in Australia. Had contact from descendant saying most of James's children went to USA and James lived married and died in Ireland. My notes are in disorder at moment so not have details.

  2. Have 3 further children to James Sexton and Anne Marrianan not in Baptismal records. Patrick born 1834, Timothy born 1835 and Peter born 1838. All emigrated to Australia.
My evidence from Australian Documents includes
Marriage Certificate Ellen Sexton to Michael Ryan
Parents given as Peter Sexton 37 years old in 1876 born Kilmurry, Clare, Ireland
Witness Timothy Sexton (Believe is Ellen's Uncle and Peter's brother as Peter had no sons)
Marriage Certificate Peter Sexton to Bridget Costello
Parents given as James Sexton and Ann Marianan
    Born Kilmurray Clare Ireland
    Witness again Timothy Sexton
    Death Certificate Peter Sexton
    Mother Anne Marrinan
    Father --- Sexton
    Born Kilmurry, Clare Ireland
Not yet tracked down Peter's arrival to Australia
Arrivial Australia Timothy Sexton and Patrick Sexton together from Clare Ireland
    Death Certificate Timothy Sexton
    Father James Sexton
    Mother Ann Marrinan
    Death Certificate Patrick Sexton
    Father James Sexton
    Mother not listed
aged 76 years in 1910 born Ireland
Cemetery records, Newspaper records and other evidence also there
Yes lack Baptismal records are problem
But due multiple evidence I can definitely claim James Sexton & Anne Marrinan as my Peter Sexton's parents and I think also for Patrick and Timothy
