Hello,
ReplyDeleteThis is very interesting. Thanks for publishing it. Bridget Sexton, who was 3 years old in the section of the 1901 Census that you show above, was my grandmother.
I have a limited amount of information about the Sexton family. Please let me know if you are interested in it. Do you know anything about her mother Mary?
Hedgehog,
ReplyDeleteHave a look at the Baptisms & Marriages, you will probably find the info that you need in there. I think that Catherine was your granny's Mom and Mary her granny.
Teresa
Hello Teresa,
ReplyDeleteYou are right - my grandmother Bridget Crawford's mother was Catherine Blake and her father was Michael Sexton. Bridget married James Crawford of Cloughanmore, Miltown Malbay in 1929. They had 4 children including my mother Josephine.
I'm wonderng if you know any more about Michael's mother Mary.
Michael Sexton was 47 in the 1901 census which would mean he was born in 1853 or 1854. Mary Sexton, the Head of Family, must have been his mother. There are 10 Michael Sextons in your list of Sexton births whose mothers were Mary but none were born in 1853/4.
However http://sextonofkilmurryibrickaneparish.blogspot.ie/p/sexton-gravestone-inscriptions-in_26.html says "In loving memory of Michael Sexton, Ballymakea Beg who died 4th August 1936 aged 86 years.R.I.P Erected by his wife Catherine Blake" :) This would mean he was born in 1849/50. There are no Michaels in the list born in those years. There are 3 born during the 1840s and one in 1858 whose mother's name was Mary - he may have been one of them.
Mary was a widow in the 1901 census, and supposedly aged 70 so that would mean she was born around 1830.
If her son Michael was born in 1849/50 or 1854/55 then was most likely married between 1847 and 1854.
There are 2 marriages of women named Mary to men named Sexton between those dates:
May 16, 1847: Michael Sexton, Rhine?, to Mary Sexton, Clondegad
March 8, 1851: Michael Sexton to Mary Corry.
Given that my grandmother Bridget was from Rhine, I'd guess that the Michael Sexton / Mary Sexton marriage was the one.
I'd be interested to know what you think and if you have more information.
regards,
Teresa Coleman
Brilliant blog, helped me add a few generations to my family tree. James and Bridgets son Daniel married an Ellen Reidy and then had a son John joseph Sexton (my great grandfather). He married an Ellen Sullivan and had a daughter Kath (my gran). I have little knowledge on the Sextons but if anybody thinks they are doing my direct line please get in touch lauren_casey@hotmail.co.uk. Thank you :)
ReplyDeletePatrick Sefton born 1891 in Ballymackea Berg ,Kilmurry, Clare is the grandfather of Kathryn A Zmuda(Baluch). Born 1951,in Cleveland, Ohio.Patrick household members, John,Honor,Michael,Margaret,Martin,James and Bridget Killen. He left Ireland in 1911 and settled in Cleveland,Ohio.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I are traveling to Ireland, 6/28 to 7/13, 2018. If you are on our itinery route maybe we might share a beer and fill in some blanks. Thank you possible relation.Kathy
Just like Kathy, John Sexton & Honor Power-Sexton were my great grandparents and Michael Sexton was my grandfather. Patrick moved in with my grandfather upon his arrival in Cleveland. I have been trying to identify my great grandfathers parents. Does anybody have any ideas...Ken Sexton
