The Sexton Family of Clounadrum, Mullagh, County Clare, Ireland
1825 Tithe Applotment for Kilmurry,
Kilmurry-Ibrrickane Parish, Co. Clare, Ireland
The townland of Cloonadrum is not listed in the 1825 Tithe Applotmetn Books. I have found this before where a townland
was not listed and I could go through the Griffith Valuation Books of 1855 and search
through the occupiers names and try and place them back to the 1825 Tithe Applotment
Books.
In this case, I was not able
to locate the families in the 1855 Valuation Books. Luckly, the Parish of Kilmurry-Ibrickane has
another Tithe Applotment Book from August 1834.
The Townland of Clounadrum is listed in this publication. I compared this document of 1834, nine years after
the first 1825 and I still could not find the families in the earlier
document. I then compared the surnames
of Clounadrum Townland in the 1834 with surnames in the 1855 and found that a
number of surnames were not listed in the later publication. The Townland of Clounadrum is only 390 acres and the average farm is only 15 – 20
acres. I found the Crawford, Kane, Pierce, Begly,
Dwyer, McKnight, O’Laughlin, Donnellay and Considine families missing
from the 1855 Valuation. This is
aproximately 30% of the townland families leaving the townland over a twenty
years period.
We all know the infamous
Irish Famine took place during this time and many farms were consolated into
larger more productive farms for the benefit of the landlord. Many people immigratred at this time with the
help of family that had crossed the oceans or by exit schemes provided by the
landlords. It was cheaper for the
landlord to assist in the passage out of
Ireland for his tenant that to pay his contribution to the Poor House
for his tenant. The following is a list
of Sexton families and O’Brien family that was listed in the 1834 Tithe
Applotment Books.

On Lot 11 a Sarah O’Brien held the land until 1863 when Martin McCarthy was listed as occupier. Martin
Carthy held the property until 1895 when Charles Carthy was listed as occupier until 1930 when John McCarthy was listed as occupier.
Martin
McCarthy married Mary
O’Brien 24 Feb 1857 and their son, Charles
McCarthy born 3 May 1858 took over the land with his wife, Mary Cooley. Their son, John McCarthy took the farm over in 1930.
Sinon
O’Brien was listed as a joint occupier with Michael Sexton in the 1834 TAB. I suspect that Sarah O’Brien is the wife of
Sinon O’Brien and formerly Sarah Sexton.
Mary
O’Brien is their daughter, Mary
O’Brien was married in 1857 and probably born in the middle 1830’s.

On Lot 31 a Patrick Sexton was listed on in the 1855 Griffith Valuation. Shortly after the land was transferred to Thomas Clohessy around 1856 and was
noted in the Valuation Revision Books. Thomas Clohessy was married to Bridget Sexton. There were three children born to this
marriage: Catherine Clohessy, 1857, John Clohessy 1859 and Michael Clohessy 1863. I am assuming that Bridget Sexton was the daughter of Patrick Sexton.
In the 1901 Census Bridget Sexton Clohessy was widowed and living with daughter, Catherin e Clohessy and in 1911 son, John Clohessy and sister, Catherine Clohessy were living
together.
The following is a list of baptism and census
records that are related to the Sexton Family living in the townland of
Cloonadrum, Co. Clare. I am not exactly
sure how they fit in to the valuation property records. I was unable to identify the individual
family. My hope is that someone will
read this page on my blog and identify the family and share with me the origins
and destination of this Sexton family.

Sarah sexton, daughter of Michael Sexton and Mary Hely emmigrated to South Australia in the 1860s. She married twice first to George Ainslie Tait and had a daughter Eliza Harriet Tait and then to William James Jennings and had 2 sons Charles William and James William. If you have any further information about Michael Sexton and Mary Hely it would be much appreciated
ReplyDeleteHi - we are in the area today and will driving from Doolin to Clonadrum on our way to Tralee. My name is William (Bill) Jennings from Melbourne, Australia. I believe Sarah Sexton was my Great, Great Grandmother. We would love to visit any grave sites of her parents or be pointed to the place where they lived. Michael Sexton and Mary Sexton (nee Hely). Kind regards, Bill Jennings - travelling with my wife Lisa and daughter (23) Amber and son (20) Jack.
ReplyDeleteHi....is this blog still active???...if so we are in Kilrush and looking for some help re a Sexton connection. My G'Grandmother died in Aust. in 1824. On her Death Cert. it stated that her Mother's Maiden name was Johanna Sexton. On her Marriage Cert. her Mother's maiden name was Johanna Griffin. We believe my G'Grandmother, Bridget was born in Mullagh 6 Jan. 1839. Her parents were Thomas McNamara and Johanna Griffin [Griffy]. Could Sexton have been Johanna Griffin [Griffy's] maiden name?

ReplyDeleteThank you for creating this blog. So far I'm only looking at it on the phone but can't wait to get into the data with my tree on the computer. I have a DNA match in Texas USA who goes back to the Boland Sexton family and I know they link to my Doherty Reynolds family but still working on where the link is. I thought I had seen a Sexton Reynolds marriage somewhere but can't find it now. I see there is also a link to Griffey in a previous comment. I have found through DNA matches that the paternal grandparents of Bridget Doherty who came to Brisbane are Connor Doherty and Joan Griffey. There are a lot of American DNA matches both Griffey and Doherty descendants who settled in Osceola Mills, Clearfield, Pennsylvania.
ReplyDeleteI also have some Sexton side matches who link to people who I know are on the Reynolds side but with my Doherty being from Miltown Malbay and Reynolds as far as I know from Ennistymon it is logical the Sexton family could link to both.
To make it even more confusing I also have a Sexton link in Charleville Cork. My greatgrandfather Murphy who married Bridget Doherty in Brisbane came from Newmarket near Charleville.
I am so appreciative of your work especially the succession details of plots of land as I have not looked at these.
Once again thank you.
Kind regards,
Carmel
Great site. My wife, from Melbourne Australia, is the great-great-granddaughter of Michael Sexton & Margaret O'Brien. I have developed a lot of information on the Sexton family in Australia if anyone is interested.
